Today in Comics History, April 30, 1945: Let's Kill Hitler

This is an expanded and updated version of a post originally published April 30, 2023.

Today in Comics History: it's Hitler's last day alive. And he's spending it with Baron Zemo? The guy who accidentally glued his mask to his head? Well, you do you, Hitler.

from Spider-Man: Fear Itself graphic novel (Marvel, February 1992), plot and co-script by Gerry Conway, co-script by Stan Lee, pencils by Ross Andru, inks by Mike Esposito, colors by Bob Sharen, letters by Rick Parker

And then, just as it was foretold by Roy Thomas in the iconic What If...? #4: another comic depiction of the (Original) Human Torch killin' Hitler on this very day in 1945. Thanks, Jim Hammond! Now, it's Miller Time.

But Roy! (you're no doubt asking now) If The O.H.T. killed Hitler, then how come, in another comic you wrote, the Torch never even shows up at all? Howcum, huh? And I guess now we'll never know.

from Last Days of the Justice Society Special #1 one-shot (DC, July 1986), co-plot and script by Roy Thomas, co-plot by Dann Thomas, pencils by David Ross, inks by Mike Gustovich, colors by Carl Gafford, letters by David Cody Weiss

At least in that comic Roy remembered that the Russians captured Berlin today in comics history. (Altho' this panel wound up out of sequence on the wrong page, even in the reprint!)

Remember: the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi! Right, Superman?

(You can see even more Hitlers killed at the Let's Kill Hitler tag!)

Nobody ever mentions that Zola also transferred Abe Vigoda’s mind into the body of the Fish-Monger.
