A Grand Night Out: Dinner with Pal Steve

I couldn't make it to see Dara Ó Briain last week and now he's yelling at me!

I am Spartacus...the Little Stuffed Bull!

While you're all out partying and carousing, I've been here at my little stuffed iMac merrily typing away, writing a guest-post for my pal Steve over at his blog Unseen Films! If you like comics, and if you like movies, and if you like me, then why not mosey over to Unseen Films to read my spotlight on the comic book version of the big blockbuster film Spartacus! You know, the movie in which Kirk Douglas plays Spartacus. And Laurence Olivier plays Spartacus. Also starring Jean Simmons and Charles Laughton as Spartacus! With special guest-star, Peter Ustinov, as Spartacus! And introducing: Tony Curtis in the role of Spartacus!

Panels from Four Color #1139 [Spartacus] (November 1960), comic book script by Gaylord Du Bois, pencils by John Buscema, inks by John Buscema and Mike Peppe

So don't delay, admit that you're Spartacus and head on over! Tell 'em Tony Curtis, and/or Bully the Little Stuffed Bull, sent you!

Ten of a Kind: Unseen Movie Adaptations

Today is a great birthday day (say that three times fast!) because two of my favorite people and best pals were born today! Hooray! (throwing confetti, blowing horn, eating cake) And I'm gonna drag them down the path of public birthday humiliation by doing a post on each of them! (Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!) First up, my good pal DB, who runs and writes much of the totally film blog Unseen Films (which both me and John have written for as well)! Believe you me, he's a guy who really knows his movies. ('Specially if they have ninjas in them) But...does he know his movie adaptations? Here's a special Ten of a Kind just for DB (and, well, everybody else who reads my blog, too!) of Movies You Probably Maybe Didn't Know Had Comic Book Adaptations!

Happy Birthday, DB, pal o' mine!

PLS STAND BY

But while I'm catching up over here, don't forget to check out my bestest pal John's movie reviews all this week at other bestest pal Steve Kopian's Unseen Films! Here's the full week's line-up!
So there's five movies right there that you can talk about to your friends without even having seen them! Who says this isn't the Golden Age of Cool and Useful Bully Cocktail Party Chatter?!?

(Also, I'll be back soon!)

These Romans are crazy!

If you know that the narration to accompany this animated gif that I hastily created...

is
The year is 50 BC. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not entirely...one small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. And life is not easy for the Roman legionnaires who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium...
...then not only do you have excellent cultural literacy, but you also will enjoy my pal John's movie review tonight over at Unseen Films of Asterix at the Olympic Games. Yes, it's a movie review of of a film about the Olympics. John keeps to his schedule just about as well as I do! Haw! (No, seriously, check it out.)

My bees eat because I'm a landowner*

My best pal John is doing movie reviews all this week over at Unseen Films, and tonight's little bit of cinema is 1967's The London Nobody Knows. Both me 'n' John L-U-V London, so discovering this documentary for the first time was great. How else would I have known there was such a lucrative career to be had in egg-breaking?

I think I have my eventual life career all figgered out.

Oh, there's lots more, and more serious stuff, in the film. (You can watch the whole thing here. But please check out John's review, too!) It's hosted and narrated by James Mason. The Voice of God! So you know it's gonna be good.

Un-immortal Beloved

Wow, look at all those Olympic laurel leaves this movie has won:

Too bad my pal John didn't like this movie as much as the Olympic judges. Even so, you can read his lukewarm review of Beloved over at Unseen Films, home of white-on-black film reviews, news, and more!

The movie stars Catherine Deneuve (ooh la la!) but warning: it also contains this scene:

Let's all go to the movies!

Panel from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #162 (February 2003), script by John Arcudi; pencils, inks, and letters by Roger Langridge; colors by James Sinclair; color separations by Digital Chameleon

While I'm recovering from my hectic daily Olympic schedule (I made a mistake staying in Brighton and not at the Olympic village), I'll be bypassing my usual nightly posts. There will now be a slight pause while you say "Who cares?"*

However, you can coast on over to my pal DB's film blog, Unseen Films, to check out a review each night this week of all sortsa fun movies! (Caution: the words "These Romans are crazy!" may occur at some point this week.) To be fair, the posts are actually written by my best pal John, but I helped with the popcorn-makin'.

Tonight! A murder is committed in front of 35,000 people watching a football match in The Arsenal Stadium Mystery! Yes, it's a movie about British football (aka soccer) that co-stars actual members of the Arsenal team, the only F.A. club actually named after a tube stop.

It's a grand film for fans of classic British detective films, and Leslie Banks is top-notch as multiple-behatted Scotland Yard Inspector Anthony Slade hunting down a dangerous murderer of footballers. But if'n you ask me, the real mystery of the movie is what the heck is Gwen Stefani staring at in space for what seems like twenty minutes when she's informed there's been a murder?

*Thank you for letting me borrow rent that joke, Mister Benny.

Bully's Sunday Round-Up over at Unseen Films

Before you go to bed, have you turned off the television? Laid out your Monday outfit? Put the cat out? Then, you're ready, just before you crawl into bed with a good book, a glass of milk, and two or three cupcakes, to click here and check out my guest post over at pal DB's blog Unseen Films!

Okay, you can have four cupcakes if you really want.

The Navigator: A movie review on Unseen Films

This week, all week, my buddy DB is spotlighting the great films of the silent clowns: Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. And yours little stuffed truly just finished helping my bestest pal John (who helps me with this blog, so it's only fair) in writing a review of our favorite Buster Keaton film, The Navigator! It's more fun than eating fish in a barrel (says my good friend Shelly the Little Otter Puppet). I got to pick out all the photos he used in the review.

So don't dally, go rally and read all about The Navigator, alligator! It's funniest movie that's ever been put on the silver screen without fart noises!

Let's all go to the movies / At the New York Film Festival

Sorry for no comics-related post tonight, folks, as I've been in Movies Oughta Be Fun! mode over the past week...I've been attending the prestigious and pleasant New York Film Festival as a reviewer! You can tell because I have my "press" badge on. Or maybe that just means I need to take my shirt to get ironed.

There are many fine films to see by important directors from around the world! Unfortunately, they have chosen not to screen my submission, the eight-hour video opus Bully Plays with Toy Cars. I guess I'll have to edit it down to YouTube length first.

My best friend John is writing reviews of some of the films for our pal DB over at Unseen Films. He and I highly recommend Aki Kaurismaki's Le Havre (click here to read John's review), and we were both slightly baffled by Nicholas Ray's experimental We Can't Go Home Again (click here to read John's review). And many of the other NYFF movies are being reviewed by DB. You can find all the New York Film Festival reviews here!

If you're in New York, New York (the city so nice they named it New York), why not check out some of the great films at the NYFF? You can see some critically acclaimed alternative cinema weeks before your snooty neighbors and then talk it up to them from now until Oscar season! Who's rubbing shoulders with Martin Scorsese now, guy next door?

If, on the other hand, you need to see Gone with the Wind with me and Shelly the Little Otter Puppet once again, then click here or on the picture below, because you know you can't see Gone with the Wind with two cute little stuffed animals often enough!

Until then, see you at the movies!

We gather together to watch cheesy movies

If you're not out partying this fine New Year's Eve, Bully-fans...and even if you are...then don't miss my guest stint over at my pal DBBurrough's blog Unseen Films all night and well into the first day of 2011: because I'm watching those bot-riffed cheesy movies that you don't often get to see: "Unseen Turkey Day," the seldom-seen episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 that aren't released on DVD!

MST3K

I'll be watching 24 straight hours of MST3K from 6 PM tonight until 6 PM tomorrow, until I run out of movies, until my VHS machine burns out, or until I fall asleep (whichever comes first). Join me (won't you) for Unseen Turkey Day!

And now, to get in on the fun, Dr. Scott Cyclops and TV's Hank reenact one of their favorite comedy bits from the series:

X-Men

Frankly My Dear (in which me 'n' Shelly review Gone with the Wind)

This ain't the only blog I hang out at, no no no! (No.) I've also been doin' some film review posts for my pal DB over at his blog Unseen Films, reviews and spotlights of movies you may not have seen or even heard of!

But you have heard of the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind, because it's part of Unseen Films' "On Further Review" Week: movies that have gotten so much critical acclaim they've kinda become sacred elephants! So me and my otter pal Shelly skewer GWTW...elephant-kebab style!

You can click on the image below to take you to the first part of our two-post GWTW post:

GWTW

I've also written reviews of Send for Paul Temple and Calling Paul Temple (two British mystery films based on the popular radio detective) and of Spice World and the '07 remake of St. Trinian's. But you should really check out the full blog to get your movie mojo running: if you think you see a lotta movies, you don't know DB!
