Today in Comics History, June 18, 1940: Spite Marriage

Crooks are trying to pull a blackmail scheme on Commissioner Dolan by claiming he was married three years ago to one of their in-pocket molls! I know, I know...same thing happened to me when they said I had been married to Keira Knightley since I was 4.

from "June 18, 1940" in The Spirit (Register and Tribune Syndicate, January 31, 1943), script by Joe Millard (?), pencils by Lou Fine, inks by Alex Kotzky, letters by Martin DeMuth

I don't usually comment on the coloring, but I really like how the background gets hotter as Dolan stews here:

All's well that ends well. Say, can you testify where you were on June 18, 1940? Me, I was broadcasting on the BBC to German-occupied France, rallying the French Resistance to me in London. Oh wait, that was General Charles de Gaulle. I'm always makin' that mistake.

Today in Comics History, April 15: Happy birthday, Jerry Grandenetti!

Born on this day in 1926: comic book artist, and advertising art exec Jerry Grandenetti! He was a member of the Eisner Studio; in the 1950s Grandenetti was penciling The Spirit as a ghost-artist, under Eisner's byline.

Before that, however, Eisner drew Grandenetti and letterer Abe Kanegson into the strip as the criminal trio Bellows, Dapperish, and Slippery Eall. The boys are back in town! I mean jail. (L-R in the panel: Grandenetti as Dapperish, Kanegson as Bellows, and Eisner as Slippery Eall.

from The Spirit (1980 series) #25 (Kitchen Sink, November 1986); reprinting "A River of Crime" (aka "Slippery Eall") from The Spirit (Register and Tribune Syndicate, November 30th, 1947); script, pencils, and inks by Will Eisner; additional inks by Jerry Grandenetti; letters by Abe Kanegson

All this week on 13th Dimension, it's Will Eisner Week! My bestest pal John (he shares his pizza with me) has written about 13 of the greatest splash pages from The Spirit Section! Say, I wonder why John didn't include this one?:

Splash page from The Spirit Section (December 1, 1940), script; pencils, and inks by Will Eisner; colors by Joe Kubert

Whaddaya think she did to deserve that paddlin' from Denny Colt? I bet she broke a lamp and then fibbed that an otter had done it instead. That's the sort of thing that gets you spanked. Um, hypothetical example, of course.

Once again, that's Will Eisner Week at 13th Dimension! Put on your fedora and mask and make sure your logo is engraved into the architecture, and head on over there! Now that's the spirit!
