365 Days of Defiance, Day 240: Kirby Says: Don't Ask, Just Punch a Nazi! (aka Today in Comics History, August 28: Happy birthday, Jack Kirby!)
Today is Jack Kirby's One Hundredth Birthday. Happy Birthday, Jack!

I've spent this year focusing on mostly fictional acts of defiance and rebellion from the pages of our favorite medium, but let's take a moment on Jack's birthday to salute this actual hero of a man who not only drew supers who would punch Nazis and their sympathizers, he would put his money where his mouth was in real life:

The only sad thing about those paragraphs is that the last sentence is no longer true.
We need Kirby more than ever, but alas, he's departed from us. His absence leaves us all a little poorer, but he's left behind his work, his words, his art, and his ideas to continue to inspire us. So now's your time to step into the shoes of the King and try to carry on his legacy. Imagine. Create. Write. Draw. Believe. Resist. Rebel. Defy. Be a king.

Today in Comics History, August 28: Kirby: Like a Rock
Jack Kirby is a big slab of rock.
Now hold on, hold on. Let me explain.
Jack Kirby is the monolith from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Or, to call it by its familiar nickname, TMA-1. Howdy, T!
Now, that's not just because Jack did the oversized treasury edition adaptation of 2001 (and can you think of a Marvel book more deserving of that big-ass format?), but that's a good enough place to start. Along with being glad that Jack Kirby never did a comic book adaptation of Kubrick's Lolita or Eyes Wide Shut. (Although I would have dearly loved to see Jack's version of Dr. Strangelove or A Clockwork Orange. Heck, even Barry Lyndon!

Today in Comics History, August 28: Happy Birthday, Jack (2008)
Acute readers of "Comics Oughta Be Good!" (not to mention the cute ones...you know who you are!) may have noticed that all the entries this week have been about the artwork of Mister Jack Kirby. You never need an excuse to post art by The King, but there is a more-than-random reason why you've been treated to Kirby's Kartooning: today is Jack's birthday. And to celebrate, what better time than to post, look at, and admire two of my favorite early 70s Kirby pages, from Fantastic Four #95:
