Today in Comics History, March 12, 1914: What's he doing in that coffin? Westing.

Today in 1914, inventor and entrepeneur George Westinghouse died. But before he did, he managed to work in inventing the Westinghouse air brake, developed the AC current mode of electrical transmission, and a whole buncha other stuff, and I'm fairly certain he had something to do with the Westinghouse refrigerator of kids joke fame (see title).

Today in Comics History, October 23: Happy birthday, Bob Montana!

Born on this day in 1920: Bob Montana, artist and creator of the original Archie comic strip, comic book feature, and characters of Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica. (I personally credit Montana and not John Goldwater, and here's a good TCJ article by R. C. Harvey that argues the same.) Montana also drew or inked some stories at Lev Gleason and Marvel Comics.

Today in Comics History, May 12: Happy birthday, Charles Biro!

Born on this day in 1911: comic book writer and artist Charles Biro, who started up at the Harry Chesler Shop, Hillman Publications (where he co-created Airboy) and MLJ (Archie) Comics, but he's become best known as one of the great creatives of Lev Gleason Comics, where he worked extensively on Daredevil Comics, co-created Crime-Buster, and edited and created for the seminal Crime Does Not Pay.
