Today in Comics History, September 16, 1964: Daily Globe, unable to gain first copyright on "Spider-Man, Threat or Menace?," goes after mutants instead

from [Uncanny] X-Men (1963 series) #14 (Marvel, November 1965), script by Stan Lee, layouts by Jack Kirby, pencils by Werner Roth, inks by Vince Colletta, letters by Artie Simek

How do we know the date? Because Alex Ross thoughtfully pencilled painted it in! (Based on Kurt Busiek's actual birthday today, I bet!)

from Marvels #2 (February 1994), script by Kurt Busiek, painted art by Alex Ross, letters by Richard Starkings and John Gaushell

The same newspaper clipping pops up much later in the X-Men's history, in the "Riot at Xavier's" storyline...

from New X-Men (2001 series) #138 (Marvel, May 2003), script by Grant Morrison, pencils by Frank Quitely, inks by Avalon Studios, colors by Chris Chuckry, letters by Albert Deschesne

...as do the newspaper mutant's nifty stripey togs, adopted by mutant supremacist Quentin Quire and his Omega Gang of revolting kids:

from New X-Men #136 (Marvel, March 2003), credits same as #138 except letters by Wes Abbott

from New X-Men #137 (Marvel, April 2003), credits same as #138 except letters by Jimmy Betancourt

Still, there are things the Professor might have read in that newspaper that would have changed the history of the X-Men even more.
