Today in Comics History, September 11: Happy birthday, Rod Whigham!

Born on this day: comic book and commercial artist Rod Whigham (G.I. Joe, The Shadow, Doc Savage, Justice League International, Star Trek, the Gil Thorpe strip, and more)!

from Marvel Age #33 and 57 (Marvel, December 1985 and December 1987); text by Jim Salicrup (#33) and Mike Carlin (#57); pencils and inks by Ron Zalme; colors by Adam Philips (#33) and Paul Becton (#57)

Rod was one of the earliest artists featured in Marvel Age's "New Talent Department," with a lotta praise from Bob Budiasky and Jim Salicrup!

from Marvel Age #8 (Marvel, November 1983)

I never think it's entirely fair to only depict the "New Talent" artwork of artists in the feature, so here's a couple of my favorite published pages showing Rod's range from action-packed to contemplative.

from (top) G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #38 (Marvel, August 1985), script by Larry Hama, pencils by Rod Whigham, inks by Andy Mushynsky, colors by George Roussos, letters by Rick Parker;
(bottom) Star Trek (1989 series) #63 (DC, September 1994), script by Kevin Ryan, pencils by Rod Whigham, inks by Arne Starr, colors by Dave Grafe, letters by Bob Pinaha

Happy birthday, Rod!
