from The Life-Changing Manga of Cleaning Up: A Magical Story (Ten Speed, June 2017), by Marie Kondo, art by Yuko Uramoto

Yes, Marie Kondo, the woman who threw away her hammer because it didn't spark joy, and wound up having to pound in a nail with a frying pan! (True story from her second book.) From there on she qualified that the stuff you keep have to spark joy and/or be useful.

Still, the "sparks joy" qualifier is a decent way to determine whether you need to keep something that I've used and have been mostly successful and happy with purging items from my apartment.
"It might become more valuable so I can eBay it later" really isn't.

NO MARIE NOT MY INCOMPLETE SET OF COMMEMORATIVE "BATMAN: FOREVER" COLLECTOR PLATES

Happy birthday, Marie! Throw something out for yourself, today!

I gotta say, all the dramatic expressions, shout balloons, and background flashes feel like Marie has grabbed me by the lapels and is shaking me as she yells her advice. Not sparking much joy there.
Huh. Marie Kondo and I have both had rulers that we really liked.
