Today in Comics History, December 21, 1984: Happy Dunkiversary, Georgeann Wells!

Today's the anniversary of the day All-American basketball player Georgeann Wells from West Virginia University became the first American woman to successfully and officially dunk a ball in an official NCAA intercollegiate basketball game regulation-sized ("men's") b-ball!

from "Moose's Odd and Amazing Sports Reports" in Archie #515 (Archie, December 2001), script by Mike Pellowski, pencils by Rex Lindsey

Wells was a four-year letter winner, scoring 1,484 points and pulling down 1,075 rebounds. Her 436 blocked shots is the all-time record for women at WVU! And she toured with the Harlem Globetrotters! Tho' there's no specific confirmation whether or not she was a Super Globetrotter.
