Today in Comics History, September 26: Happy birthday, Louise Simonson!

Born on this day: Comic book editor and writer Louise Simonson (also Louise Jones): scripter on Superman: The Man of Steel, Conan, New Mutants, and co-creator of Apocalypse, Cable, Stryfe, Steel, and Power Pack! (And much more!)

from Marvel Age #33, 57, and 93 (Marvel, December 1985, December 1987, and October 1990); text by Jim Salicrup (#33), Mike Carlin (#57), and Chris Eliopoulis & Barry Dutter (#93); pencils and inks by Ron Zalme; colors by Adam Philips (#33), Paul Becton (#57), and Marie Javins (#93)

Louise got her start appearing in comics pretty early. Here she is (right) on the cover of Mike Sterling's favorite comic book!

cover of House of Secrets #92 (June 1971), pencils and inks by Bernie Wrightson, colors and wash effects by Jack Adler

No, Jack Kirby had nothing to do with that cover, but I thought you might like to see Tom Scioli draw Louise!

from Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of the King of Comics (Ten Speed, July 2020), script and art by Tom Scioli

Here's editor Louise appearing in one of the many fumetti from Ka-Zar the Savage (which replaced Ka-Zar the Mild on the stands after a poor initial launch)...

from Ka-Zar the Savage #18 (Marvel, September 1982), concept by Bruce Jones, Louise Simonson, and Brent Anderson, script by Bruce Jones, photographs by Danny Fingeroth, letters by Rick Parker (?)

...and coming to the emotional aid of a Man-Thing-frightened Chris Claremont (along with Danny Fingeroth and Jim Shooter).

from Man-Thing (1979 series) #11 (Marvel, July 1981), script by Chris Claremont, pencils by Val Mayerik, inks by Bob Wiacek, colors by Carl Gafford, letters by Janice Chiang

Here's Louise ordering the X-Men creative staff (Chris Claremont and Paul Smith) to cool it, dudes. Ann Nocenti looks on with her huge, all-seeing, Little Lulu eyes.

from [Uncanny] X-Men Annual (1970 series) #7 (Marvel, January 1984), script by Chris Claremont, pencils by Bret Blevins, inks by Al Milgrom, colors by Glynis Oliver, letters by Michael Higgins

You probably know Louise is married to comics artist and scripter Walt Simonson (hint: check the name), and here's the All-True Story™* of how they met and fell in love. (*story may not actually be true)

from "I Love You, Miss Jones!" in My Own Romance #66 (Marvel/Atlas, November 1958), pencils by Matt Baker or Stan Goldberg or Vince Colletta (?), inks by Vince Colletta, letters by Artie Simek

Naw, that can't be true. Maybe this DC comic tells the real story? Just get your crayons, cross out "Dennis Peters," and write in "Walt Simonson."

from "Too Young to Go Steady!" in Young Romance #137 (DC, August 1965), pencils (and inks?) by Gene Colan, letters by Milt Snapinn (?)

What is the mysterious reason that Mrs. Jones didn't want Louise to go steady with young Dennis Walt?

A: Because when they held hands they turned into THE INCREDIBLE YOUNG HULKS IN LOVE.

Y'know, I don't think that was really Weezie and Walt Simonson.

But this is them...ir feet, as seen in another X-Men Annual. From this panel you can tell that without a doubt, the Simonsons got sole.

from [Uncanny] X-Men Annual (1970 series) #10 (January 1987), script by Chris Claremont, pencils by Arthur Adams, inks by Terry Austin, colors by Petra Goldberg, letters by Tom Orzechowski

Walt 'n' Weezie also appear in this Thor story, or so several comic book indexes tell us. Unless this is an appearance of Jim and Maggie Power, the parents of the Power Pack. But that woulda been cruel for them to go see the Asgardians without bringin' their kids along.

from Thor #359 (September 1985); script, pencils, and inks by Walt Simonson, colors by Christie Scheele, letters by John Workman

See? Here's the Power Parents, based at least visually on the real-life Simonsons. I sure hope the creator of Power Pack got Walt and Louise's permission...oh.

from Power Pack (1984 series) #1 (Marvel, August 1984), script by Louise Simonson, pencils by June Brigman, inks by Bob Wiacek, colors by Glynis Oliver, letters by Joe Rosen

(Louise does actually appear within the pages of Power Pack #1, though!)

from Power Pack #1, art by Walt Simonson

Weezie (can you find her here?!?), but not Walt, was invited to the El/Lane nuptials. Wassa matter, Sam Lane, ya too cheapass to spring for a plus one on the invites? (A: Yes.)

from Superman: The Wedding Album one-shot (DC, December 1996), pencils by Dan Jurgens, inks by Jerry Ordway, colors by Glenn Whitmore, letters by Bill Oakley

Louise Simonson: hijacking the Bullpen Bulletins column away from Shooter since 1982. (She's my hero!)

Let us all wish Louise Simonson, one of the nicest and most talented people in the business, a very very happy birthday!

from What If...? (1977 series) #34 (August 1982)

Happy birthday, Louise! Make Walt take you out to a nice diner!
