Today in Comics History, May 1: Happy birthday, Win Mortimer!

He's the co-creator of the Bat-Boat! (first appearnce, Detective Comics #110, April 1946)

from "Batman and Robin in Scotland Yard!" in Detective Comics (1937 series) #110 (DC, April 1946), script by Don C. Cameron, pencils and inks by Win Mortimer

As you can see from the "signature" on that splash page, these were the days when every Batman story splashed "Bob Kane" as the only credit. Poor Win Mortimer...didn't you get to have any credit for this story?

Oh ho ho ho ho ho! What if you were to sneak your own name into the artwork for the story? Delightfully devilish, Mortimer! Yes, that's Win Mortimer, co-creator of the Bat-Boat!

Happy birthday, Win!

I mostly associate Win Mortimer with Spidey and Supergirl. The older Batman stories reprinted during my personal Golden Age tended to be stuff drawn by Sheldon Moldoff and Dick Sprang with some Curt Swan on World's Finest sprinkled in. Having read more widely in decades since, though, I find I prefer the pencils of Mortimer and Swan, nostalgia and delightfully goofy expansions of the Batman family aside.
