Today in Comics History, May 1, 1942: Cheesy Petes, Roy Thomas, why'd you write Sandy like this?!?

Oh, I know Roy was trying to realistically portray a historic language and attitude that was all-too-common of the times, but it still hurts a lot to hear a hero talk like this.

First, here's the usual warning:

This previously published content includes negative portrayals of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and were wrong now. Social change is a journey, and we must acknowledge where we've come from to build a more inclsuive future. These panels are presented as they were originally published, because to do so otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed.

And here's the panel:

from Young All-Stars #6 (DC, November 1987), script by Roy Thomas & Dann Thomas, pencils by Brian Murray, inks by Malcolm Jones III and Bob Downs, letters by Jean Simek

I will say that Roy took Sandy through an evolution to begin accepting and not hating Japanese-Americans. As a fan of Sandy, I wish the series could have gone on longer (it was cancelled with #31) to show his further growth.
