I think more horrifying than the giant sea monsters is that the writer thought the process of reading required instructions. The writer thinking to himself, "But wait! How will my readers know to turn the page if I don't tell them?!"
True story: When I was but a lad, I wrote and drew a Spider-Man story in which his antagonist was Octo, a mutated man-octopus, who tried to set free all the pets in a mall pet store and emitted an inky mist.
That is actually one of my favorite panels of all time.
