Interestingly, the Road Runner is violating one of the cardinal rules of Road Runner cartoons (which Chuck Jones cited in *Chuck Amuck*) - that the Road Runner never takes any real action against the Coyote beyond occasionally startling him with a "Meep Meep!"
I believe the Dell/Gold Key comics went pretty far off-model from the cartoons in a number of ways, though. (Probably unavoidably, as the animated cartoon format was probably hard to sustain on the comics page for long.)

Absolutely. The Road Runner spoke (in rhyme) and has sons. I remember being deeply bothered by this at the time and the Road Runner comics were not favorites. (Of course I would read to pieces every comic Mama Bull bought me!) Ditto the Pink Panther, who also spoke in his comics: pantomime doesn't work as well on the printed page, although Sergio Aragones or someone of that caliber coula pulled it off! (Speakin' o Sergio, his Groo-partner-in-crime Mark Evanier talks here about the Road Runner comic books.
Despite my discomfort with the concept, I still have 'em all, and I should drag them out to look over. A lot of them are good goofy fun.
The L.A. Times recently started running a Pink Panther strip on Sundays that's pantomime. It's really lousy, though. Really.
