Today in Comics History, October 4: Happy birthday, Rutherford B. Hayes!

Born on this day in 1822: Rutherford B. Hayes, our 19th President! The "B" stands for "birthday!"

Here's everything you need to know about him.

"Rutherford B. Hayes" from Life Stories of American Presidents one-shot (Dell, November 1957), pencils and inks by John Buscema, letters by Ben Oda

That's only one page, so it doesn't fit in that he was the creator of Hollywood's Hays censorship code, and great-great-great-great grandfather of Molly Hayes of the Runaways. Possibly also related to Isaac Hayes, but Ol' Ruth wasn't THAT funky.

Oh! And he had a great gorilla.

from "John S. Mosby: Great Guerrilla" in Real Life Comics #35 (Pines, September 1946), creators uncredited and unknown

Following his death, Rutherford B. was pressed flat and turned into a stamp by Colonel Gumm.

"All-American Stamp Page" from DC Comics cover-dated August 1941

But he did fight Deadpool when he was one of the Zombie Presidents!

from Deadpool (2013 series) #6 (May 2013), script by Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn, pencils and inks by Tony Moore, colors by Val Staples, letters by Clayton Cowles

There! I'm sure you'll pass your pop quiz tomorrow about Rutherford Buttercream Hayes.

Happy birthday, Hayesey!
