Yeah, that was an especially egregiously silly part of the movie.
Wait, didn't nearly the _same darn thing_ happen back in the 80s, only with Batman and the KGBeast?
KGBeast was even worse, he had an axe and had to choose between chopping a rope and chopping his wrist...
Anyway the thing about this one is Cap wears gloves laced with CHAIN MAIL so the Red Skull's dagger would not have been able to cut through in time which is why he had to cut off his own unarmored hand.
