comic panels from "A Kiss for Smurfette" in 65th Smurfs Anniversary (Free Comic Book Day 2023) (Papercutz, May 2023); script and art by Peyo; smurflations by Joe Johnsn and Nanette McGuinness; letters by Janice Chiang, Justin Birch, and Bryan Senka
Yeah. There’s a reason comics lettering was traditionally not just all-caps but usually as not-frilly as possible. Although funnily enough, while I’ve seen more generic lettering of Chiang’s from early in her career, what’s most familiar to me is her later, more unique style very much in the vein of Bob Lappan’s on Zot! and Justice League International, although I haven’t found a link between them.
It took three people to come up with lettering that awful?
ReplyDeleteBoy, I'm really not a fan of the Papercutz Smurf lettering either. Janice Chiang should know better!
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, my scan makes it look a little fuzzy. But this font at the decreased size of the Papercutz volumes = really tough read.
