Today in Comics History, August 30: Happy birthday, Jack C. Harris!

Born on this day: comics scripter Jack C. Harris (Secrets of Haunted House, Superman Family, Wonder Woman, Men of War, Detective Comics, Sgt. Rock, House of Mystery, Kamandi and lots more)! He also co-created the DC/Marvel Universe-spanning character Annex and wrote his miniseries, which means he doesn't get royalities on it from two companies!

"DC Profiles #9: Jack C. Harris" from DC Comics cover-dated June 1977

Jack is poofed into the story for a second in a classic fourth-wall-smashin' Bat-Mite tale:

from "Bat-Mite's New York Adventure!" in Detective Comics #482 (DC, February 1979), script by Bob Rozakis, pencils by Michael Golden, inks by Bob Smith, colors by Anthony Tollin, letters by Milt Snapinn

Here, as a DC editor in a gloriously orange shirt, he sends George Kashdan off in search of the guy who doesn't know where he put his volume of Will Eisner comics:

from "The Man Who Lost His Spirit" in Ghosts #95 (DC, December 1980), script by George Kashdan, pencils and inks by Nestor Infante, colors by Jerry Serpe

Here, Jack Harris and Paul Kupperberg probably wish they were feeding fan-favorite Goldie instead of Gregory:

from "Gregory the Gargoyle" in House of Mystery (1951 series) #254 (DC, September 1977), script by Jack C. Harris, pencils by Ric Estrada, inks by Jack Abel, letters by Gaspar Saladino

After too many incidents like that, Harris calmly passes editorship of the book to Len Wein and serenely exits the House of Mystery:

from House of Mystery #282 (1951 series) (DC, July 1980), script by Len Wein (?), pencils and inks by Romeo Tanghal

Along with Bob Rozakis, Cary Bates, and E. Nelson Bridwell, Jack C. Harris also appears in this photographic cover. Judging from his hair clor in the past two stories, I'm guessing he's the guy with the red hair and the orange jacket here!

cover of Superman (1939 series) #239 (DC, July 1975), pencils by Curt Swan, inks by Bob Oksner, photograph by Jack Adler, colors by Tatjana Wood

No, we haven't see the back of Jack C. Harris!

from an untitled Abel story in The Unexpected #190 (DC, March 1979), script by Paul Levitz (?), pencils and inks by Romeo Tanghal (?), letters by Ben Oda

Now we have. happy birthday, Jack!
