ASM 262 was always my favorite of the Marvel photo covers, seeing as it was only one featuring live versions of their characters that didn't look like crap (even if the dude playing Peter Parker is very awkwardly posed).
I'm speculating that these were done in the days before Photoshopping. Surely Bully, you could put your talents to work and come up with an original 10 of a Kind. (I Love the Spiderwoman one.)
One my favorite "photo-covers" is from the first run of New Warriors. Marvel hired a model, painted her blue, and had her pose as Kymaera/Namorita. It was all kinds of mysterious-looking.

ReplyDeleteSo cool that they would bother updating the background photo for the Sub-Mariner reprint...

ReplyDeleteThat is a nice one, Anon! I'd seen it but hadn't noticed it was a photo until I saw it up close. Here 'tis.
ReplyDeleteKirby did that all the time, thought not on covers as much.
ReplyDeleteThat ASM cover is one of my faves.
I'm not a big fan of the technique otherwise.
Let's not forget the astoundingly awful cover to Dazzler #21
