Oh my god, that was coffee-out-the-nose funny! I actually read "The Cross and the Switchblade" (the book) when I was a kid. Mainly for the descriptions of the "degenerate"--but fun-sounding--teen life it depicts.
To use an overused phrase... that IS AWESOME! Absolutely hilarious. When I had my tonsils out as a kid, the youth minister at my church brought me some Spire Archies and "The Cross and the Switchblade" for my postoperative recovery.
They didn't inspire my faith so much as frighten me.
