Ten of a Kind: It's good to be the King

Jack Kirby Week

It's Jack Kirby Week here at Comics Oughta Be Fun! And what better way to help kick it off than with ten bold and brilliant Kirby Kovers?!? Now, this isn't the Top Ten Greatest or Most Important Kirbys (I'd need a team of comics fans and scholars to even narrow it down to a few dozen) or even my Top Ten Favorite (which might, knowing my love for the Big Guy Made Outta Orange Rocks, be ten Fantastic Four covers). No, this is no more and no less than. Ten Kirby Covers I Really Enjoy, that make my little buttons eyes pop out and make me reach for my 10¢ / 12¢ / 35¢ / whatever coinage it costs just to see what the Sam Scratch wonderful story is behind that brain-blasting cover, Jack? So, take it away, Ten Jacks!

So that's it, Ten fabulous, fantastic, frenetic covers featuring the work of Jack Kirby. That's not even the tip of the iceberg, folks—I could easily make this Twenty-Five or One Hundred or, let's face it, One Thousand of a Kind. But you've gotta stick to the rules of Ten of a Kind, or else...

Aw, what the heck...just one more. If I can't break the boundaries for The King, who would I break 'em for?

(More Ten of a Kind here.)

You know, there just wasn't enough Jack Kirby Batman.

...or Kirby Green Lantern. Especially with his incredible eye for the cosmic, there are about a million amazing covers left undone with GL alone.

I could be wrong, but I think Jerry Robinson drew Batman & Robin on that Detective cover. At least, I'm pretty sure it wasn't Jack.

You're abso-toot-ley right, Phillip, and I shoulda made that more clear. Robinson pencilled the Batman and Robin figures on Detective #65, but that's Kirby and Simon on the Boy Commandos. Nobody drew tougher kids than Kirby!

Bully, not only do I appreciate this whole King Kirby tribute, I really love the theme of this list: no superlatives, just ten covers that strike you a certain way. Keep up the GREAT work.
